Lessons for YOUR unique goals

I am passionate about empowering vocalists to manage their voice and communicate with other musicians. We’ll assess where you are in your music journey and work towards your personal goals.

I’m currently booking adult students, post-secondary preparation students, and workshops for groups. Children’s lessons are on hiatus.

  • Online via Zoom or in person in Toronto, Ontario, Canada
  • Private lessons are $80/hour
  • Workshops are $250-500

Vocal lessons

Discover the amazing sounds your voice can make. Beginners will build the confidence to sing. We’ll work on placement/resonance, healthy technique, and sustainable singing for your body. More experienced singers will improve range, pitch, tone and style. Jazz vocalists will dive into all aspects of jazz singing including interpretation, rhythmic feel, song form, embellishments and scatting, helpful piano skills, working with a band, and more.

Musicianship

The ability to read music opens up amazing opportunities. Learning music notes and rhythms will elevate your contribution in choir and other music groups. Going deeper into chords and song structure will help to communicate your creative ideas with musical collaborators. And then there’s my favourite thing: notation! Let’s get you writing down your music like a pro.

Piano lessons

Playing piano is indeed as marvelous as it looks. So let’s get started! Beginners will work on note-reading skills and playing by ear so you can play the music you love. For those with a little more piano experience, we can study introductory accompaniment and improvisation for pop and jazz.

Workshops

What does your singing group need to work on?

I offer half-day or full-day workshops on a variety of topics singers need to know, including:

  • vocal technique
  • tuning and blending
  • sight singing
  • ear training
  • jazz interpretation
  • microphone technique

Workshop fees depend on the length, number of singers, and any other variables (e.g., renting a mixer and speakers).

Typically, a three hour workshop for 8-12 participants is $300 and a full-day (five hour) workshop is $500.

I do not provide a workshop location, rather that is the responsibility of your group.

“Mim led a workshop on microphone technique for our jazz choir that was extremely useful. She had prepared a two-page information sheet, which she handed out at the outset and used to guide us through different aspects of using a mic. The exercises that she had us do were all focused on the different aspects she was addressing. We all sounded much better at the end of it. My only regret, at the end of two hours, was that it wasn’t longer!”

Lesson policies

Scheduling: I offer semi-regular or casual lessons that are scheduled and paid for on our agreed dates. However, students preparing for post-secondary music must attend regular lessons on a pre-paid plan.

Payment & receipts: E-transfer is preferred, but cash is also accepted. Receipts will be emailed. Pre-payment of two to four lessons is required for lessons on a regular weekly schedule.

Rescheduling & missed lessons: Students may request a lesson re-schedule with 24-hour advance notice. For late notice or no notice, full payment is required.

Refunds: If a student discontinues lessons before the end of a pre-paid pack, any remaining lessons will be refunded (minus any outstanding missed lesson fees). There is no refund for lessons that have been taught, or for lessons missed with no notice or late notice. A Zoom lesson with technical difficulties will not be refunded; instead, we will either switch to a telephone lesson or re-schedule.

Materials: I provide exercises and some songs, and students also purchase their own music as needed with my help to choose appropriate material. Online students must be able to scan (or photograph) and email materials.

Recording: Students may record our lessons for review and practice.
